“The Rock”

The rock sits over there stands over there lives over there but does not rest over there though its has never moved since born because although worn away by forces daring to think themselves greater than the rock he mocks them by standing tall and proud and although the wind cannot blow him away with one gust and the rain cannot wash him away in one downpour they eat him incessantly slowly relentlessly slowly and bits and pieces of him dwarfed by the sands in an hourglass chip off and crumble to the earth but still the rock does not move or even bend like willows beside him which are noted for their wisdom in bending because the willows lose bits and pieces of their integrity by bending just as surely as the rock loses bits and pieces of itself by refusing to bend and since the willows bend in fear of the elements Father Time is embarrassed by such cowardice and the hourglass exacts a heavy toll on the thin mortal sticks poking out of the eternal earth but the strong rock never bends and never fears and never flinches as it faces obstacles as great as the willow does and for his bravery Father Time slows the hourglass for the rough rounded rock and the stone sees many of the obsequious sticks poke up out of the ground and rot and fall before the wind and the rain and the elements wear away too much and the rock cracks and splits and gains the slumber it so much deserves.
This poem was written about the same time as "A Peaceful Rest" during my brief 2-poem "period" where I focused on Nature. :p It was written for a prose-poem assignment actually.
